The hats of the elite were made of felted beaver hair and had a decoration of, for example, lace. Less expensive tricorns were made of wool felt or leather. The tricorn was made for the temporary fashion: it fitted exactly under the arm when entering a building, and it had the perfect form to exhibit the fashionable wig of a wealthy gentleman.
